spring crafting? what's the point?

Because it makes me happy!  I often see things in my house and other places that make me think.  "Hmmm... What can THIS become?"  I often find myself reimagining things.  I'm a single Mom with a Daughter in college who I am determined to keep from having a huge debt load when she finishes college.  I work 5 jobs currently so that we can pay bills and pay her college each semester.  God has been good to us and as she has no debt from college thus far.  God has graciously gifted us a car (2018) so she has transportation at school and can get around to do what she needs to do.  She is currently in a dorm room alone and with the help of the Lord, we are hoping to move her into an apartment for her Junior and Senior years.  Noelle thrives on her own and is good at managing her time and is fairly good with managing her finances.  I'm thankful for that.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY, we've been on our own for 14 years now.  We've never had a lot, but we've always had enough.  I have been creative in doing a lot of things so Noelle wasn't lacking any of the necessities nor was she lacking fun and whimsy in her life. In fact, let's have a quick look at some of the creative things we've done over the years.

Noelle always loved bags.  I made the first one from scraps of what I had laying around the house.  It was such a hit, she kept it for a VERY long time.  When long bags were super popular, I made the second bag.  We were really struggling financially, so I made her first day of school outfit from a denim hoodie (Goodwill) that I cut the hood off of, a tank top ($7) and a skirt I made to match the bag.  I used an old jean skirt to create the bottom part.  We just do what we have to do, right?  I ended up making several bags for Noelle's birthday party. We stuffed them with Dollar Store goodies and they were a hit!

super cute coat rack - inexpensive and simple!

This is a very simple, easy, unfinished coat rack from Walmart.  You can find it here for $9.97 but most Walmarts carry them in store.  Side Note: We make things so complicated when simple is often best!  This coat rack  included 2 nice long screws to mount it to the wall.  It's sturdy and just what I was looking for.  My office has walnut stained baseboards and I have a bookcase with the same finish.  I wanted to bring that walnut wood element to the other side of my office and this was PERFECT.

Here's what I did.  My only expense for this project was the rack itself.  I had everything else already.  I bet you have a lot of things laying around the house that you can use for projects like this.  As you can tell, that paint brush has seen some better days.  haha!
SUPPLIES
  • Coat rack
  • Stain or paint of your choice
  • Paint brush
  • Drop cloth
  • Drying cloth
  • Gloves

I made sure to shake the stain thoroughly.  I made sure the door was open before I began this so I had fresh air coming in.  I evaluated the coat rack.  It did not require sanding so I got to skip that step.  I put my gloves on, opened my stain and applied about 3 coats to get it to the finish I wanted.  After each coat, I wiped off any excess so that the stain didn't pool and leave weird spots on the rack.

I let it dry thoroughly before I placed it on the wall.  I used a level to make sure it was evenly hung.  That's it!  D-O-N-E.  I hope you'll give something like this a try!

child's desk makeover

This child's desk came to our home about 10 years ago.  Noelle had begun her noellejanae.com website and she was making videos left and right.  She wanted her own office because my office was in the house at that time.  We had plenty of space and I just couldn't deny her!  LOL

The desk came with that large shelf in the back and a couple of other things.  The whole lot was $15 I believe and everything is solid wood.  The desk stayed with her for years until 2020 when I gave her my grown up desk and took her small desk until I could find what I want.  I decided that this little desk could become so much more and I moved it over to my office!

REFRESH, RENEW, REWORK, RECYCLE, REPURPOSE and RECLAIM!
"My office is a lovely, warm, inviting space."

Ok, people.  That's great and everything but I've been in this same "lovely, warm and inviting space" for 7 years.  I love it, but it's time to update.

My office is often the catchall for all sorts of things especially over the holidays.  I am determined to update my space with new to me rustic furniture, DIY projects, and fresh paint.  If you want to make a major, but inexpensive change to your space or furniture, PAINT IT.

Today is the day I start the painting process.  We've already been prepping the walls - taking down all the art and shelving, filling in holes, spackling and sanding.  I did a test patch last night.  The color I've selected is CHARCOAL BLUE from Behr. I absolutely love this color.  I'm using a premium one coat paint.  I have found that the better the paint, the better the painting experience and the better the outcome.  Don't scrimp on paint!  Always check returned paints and samples in case there's something there you can use at a much better price.  My office is going from a warm tan to this and I couldn't be more excited.
